St George's Basilica, Prague
They do not point, these arches,But bend in a low arc around silence. Is it that they have nothingTo point at, existing only to letWhat light there is suffuse their stoneworkAnd transmit from somewhere else what -In darkness - is radiantly glimpsed?Or is it that they frame
That which is beyond them,The unlit chambers where mysteryLingers suggestively in corners, unassumingAnd unwilling to aspire? LackingSharpness, they do not pierce the skyBut reflect, more subtly, heaven’s domain.
What a beautiful church. I'm not Christian, but I do find churches fascinating and peaceful and often like to visit them. And the piece of poetry is a lovely compliment to it.
