Confluence
Flowing together, two streams of water
Into one river: one a rush down through rocks
The other a glide between level banks.
Where they meet there is a line
Across the surface of the water where
The glide and the rush run together
For a space, then spread into each other
And flow on around an eyot, as if
Still separate for a time, but not so;
The onward flow then is wider, deeper,
And with one purpose between rocky banks
Hurrying forward excited, for a while until
Winding, in a relaxed meander, across the valley floor.
