aTonalHits

I'm currently exploring the YouTube channel of aTonalHits after meeting two of the New York based musicians associated with it - Illya Filshtinskiy and Katha Zinn - on a walking holiday in Skye recently. The channel contains a number of engaging video clips, including some of Illya and Katha playing piano and violin pieces from Bach to Webern, Arvo Pärt (link above) and other modern composers. The channel is well worth a look if any of this music interests you, or if you want to hear enthusiastic young musicians displaying their talents and exploring the possibilities of new media.

The video clips include - as well as straight performances by the artists -a cartoon style humorous sketch of Bach telling Barak Obama to ensure proper funding for the Arts, concluding with the strap line 'Always listen to Bach', which is good advice whichever way you take it.

There is also an aTonalHits web site from which their CD of Sonatas for Violin and Piano by Schnittke can be purchased or downloaded and with information about their forthcoming recording project.

The Schnittke recording is serious music, absorbing in its intensity if you take the trouble to fully engage with it. I happened to come to the CD after listening to Shostakovich's Piano Sonata No 2 and his 24 Preludes and the transition seemed wholly appropriate.

Even if you feel challenged by this music the site offers an opportunity to sample some of it as does the YouTube channel. Why not give it a try?
